A descriptive study to assess knowledge of primigravida mothers regarding minor ailments of pregnancy

Abstract

Background: Minor disorders are minor in that they are not life-threatening. As soon as a woman becomes pregnant and experiences early pregnancy fatigue with nausea and vomiting, she realizes the inaccuracy of her description. The midwife's role is to always be aware of the occurrence of complications and refer accordingly. As always, she needs to be educated. Pregnancy is a very exciting time, but it is often the minor discomforts associated with pregnancy that can cause  discomforts. A midwife is usually the first medical professional that a pregnant woman sees.

Material and methods: A descriptive research approach was used. Study conducted at antenatal clinic selected hospital of  Karad. With an objectives to assess the knowledge regarding minor ailments of pregnancy and its home remedies  among primigravida mothers. Find an association between knowledge and selected demographic variables. Population for the present study was primigrvida mothers. Sample size was 120 primigravida mothers. Samples were selected by random sampling technique. Aantenatal mothers those who were willing to participate were included in study. Ethical approval taken by ethical committee of KIMSDU, Karad. Structured questionnaire was used. Written informed content was obtained from samples. Data was analyzed in the term of objectives for the study by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results: Majority sample 47.50% from 21-23 years, maximum 43.33% were having Secondary education, 71.67% from rural area, 87.50% were from joint family, Maximum 95% of mothers were house wife, 93.33% were Hindu and  48% of antenatal mothers were having monthly income Rs.5,000 and above. Out of 120 primigravida maximum 59.17% of mothers are having poor or inadequate knowledge score, 37.50 % mothers were having average knowledge score and  3.33% having good knowledge score with  Mean 10.01, Median 10 and SD 3.318. About association there was no association found between socio-demographic variables and knowledge scores.

Conclusion: The present study  concludes that primigravida  mothers were having inadequate knowledge regarding minor ailments of pregnancy and its home remedies,  there is need to educates mothers during their prenatal checkups and classess about minor disorders of pregnancy and its home remedies..
