Abstract

Since quorum sensing (QS) plays a significant role in microbial adhesion to biofilm, it becomes imperative in microbial corrosion wherein QS has been regarded to play a key role. The aim of our study is review the literature regarding the role of QS in microbial corrosion.

Materials and methods: we searched the literature using Pubmed search engine. The keywords used were (“quorum sensing”) AND (“microbial*” OR “biofilm” OR “microbiota*” OR “bacteria”) AND (“corrosion” OR “metal degradation” OR “metal dissolution”).

Results: we obtained 127 articles from the search and based on inclusion criteria, 10 were included in the review.

Conclusions: The literature found that QS played a significant role in microbial corrosion.   Quorum quenchers were used which interferes with the process of quorum sensing, as the main mode of addressing the corrosion caused by microorganisms like sulfate reducing bacteria.
